Starting A Home-Based Candy Business

If you are going to be opening your own hoe cottage candy shop then you have a lot of things to get in order. However, once you have everything done and you are up and running, you will have a fantastic time owning your own candy business on your own terms. When you decide to start your own home cottage candy business, you want to follow the information in this guide to get started on your way as soon as possible:

Get your cottage food license

The first thing you want to do is to get set up with your license. This can take a bit to go through, so you don't want to put it off until the last minute. Each state will have different rules, so always make sure you are following all of the rules for the state you will be doing business in. Make sure that your home meets all the requirements and be sure you get your food handlers card by the time frame allotted to you when you apply for your license.

Get your business license

Along with getting a cottage food license, you also need a traditional business license. You will need to fill out a separate form for this license. This will be easy to get as long as you choose a name that has your own name in it, or a business name that isn't being used by another company in your region. It's a good idea to make sure you search the business name database yourself so you don't run into any problems.

Come up with your recipes and list of ingredients

Make sure all your recipes include only the types of ingredients that your license will allow. Keep track of everything going into each candy and make sure you are always updating the list as ingredients change.

Make labels for your packages

Make labels that list all of the ingredients each product has in them. You will need to stick these labels on each package. If you change any ingredients, they MUST be changed on the labels as well. You also want to make a label that tells the name of your business, the product and that states the product was made in a home kitchen.

Get the right candy boxes

You want to get boxes for your candies that fits them correctly, so they look nice when customers open the boxes and so they stay protected. When you are purchasing boxes, you should also purchase any tissue paper you want to go in them, or any candy dividers that can help prevent the candies from sticking to each other.
